President's message

A message from HÂþ»'s President and Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Kim Brooks.

Nova Scotia gets under your skin. Not loudly and not all at once, but steadily. When I moved here in 2010, I did not imagine I would stay when my service as Dean of the Schulich School of Law was completed. Now, I cannot imagine leaving. Somewhere along the line, I woke up and realized that this part of the world has shaped me more than I expected, and I am grateful for that. I feel indebted.

For more than two centuries, our university has been formed by this place. You can feel it in the fog that often coats the Halifax campus and in the wide sky over the Agricultural campus. Students who arrive here, whether from Yarmouth or Mumbai, quickly learn that Nova Scotia’s character becomes part of their own. This province calls people toward service, grounds lofty ideas in community realities, and reminds us that excellence without relevance is a hollow pursuit.

And just as Nova Scotia shapes HÂþ», HÂþ» shapes Nova Scotia.

We see it in health professionals who train here and serve across the province. We see it in researchers whose work strengthens climate resilience, ocean sustainability, agriculture, and clean energy. We see it in entrepreneurs and artists whose ideas enrich our civic and cultural life. HÂþ» is not simply situated in this province, we are woven into its future.

As Nova Scotia grows and changes, HÂþ» enters its third century with a renewed sense of responsibility to help shape that future. We know that a thriving Nova Scotia strengthens Canada’s capacity and contributes to solutions the world needs. This moment requires HÂþ» to:

  • be an anchor of stability and a catalyst for innovation (see this issue’s story on the Pulse Biomed Hub as an example)
  • help build a workforce that can meet the province and country’s needs
  • partner deeply with Indigenous communities, governments, industries and nonprofits, and
  • ensure that education and opportunity reach more people in more places.

At our best, we are a place where people find their footing, discover their voice, and learn to meet challenge with purpose. These are the qualities — belonging, leadership, and the pursuit of excellence — that shape HÂþ»â€™s character.

HÂþ» and Nova Scotia have grown together for generations. Our stories are braided, our futures intertwined. As we step into the years ahead, one truth endures: This is a place like no other. And HÂþ» is, and will remain, a university shaped by, and shaping, this remarkable place.
