Emergency loans

Emergency loans are a form of student financial assistance that can help cover living expenses while you wait for confirmed funding, like student loans, awards, or employment income.

Loan details

  • Maximum loan amount: $1,000

  • Interest: 0% (if repaid by the due date)

  • Standard loan term: 30 days

  • Maximum term: 90 days (in some cases)Ìý

  • Processing schedule: Weekly

  • Application deadline: Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. (with all documents submitted)

Eligibility

You may be eligible if you:

  • Are currently registered at HÂþ»­ (full-time or part-time)

  • Are experiencing a short-term financial shortfall

  • Can provide proof of your ability to repay the loan

Additional conditionsÌý

  • You may normally apply once per academic termÌý
    (exceptions may be considered)

  • If a previous temporary loan is more than 30 days overdue, your application may not be considered

Note: Students at the University of King’s College should contact King’s Registrar’s Office for their temporary loan program.

How to apply

You must provide documentation showing how you will repay the loan. Acceptable documentation includes:

Government student aid

  • Copy of your loan assessment or notice of award
  • Funding must be sufficient to cover repayment of the temporary loan

Important: You are not eligible if you have already received these funds.

Employment income

Proof of employment including:Ìý

  • Pay rate
  • Hours per week
  • Duration of employment

Parental guarantee

Letter or email from a parent (from their email address) confirming that they will repay the loan if you are unable to do so. The email should include:

  • Loan amount
  • Repayment date

Teaching or residence assistantships

Employer confirmation of:Ìý

  • Salary
  • Terms of employment

Graduate fundingÌý

Confirmation of scholarship, fellowship, or award:Ìý

  • Amount
  • Duration
  • Payment schedule

Important: If you are under 19 years old, you must also submit a parental consent letter.

After you apply

Application statusÌý

You will receive a decision by email to your HÂþ»­ account.

If approved:

  • A promissory note will be included that outlines the repayment terms for your loan

Receiving your funds

Once your signed promissory note is received:

  • Funds will be sent by Interac e-Transfer to your HÂþ»­ email

  • Processing time is up to 4 business days after receipt of the promissory note.

Repaying your loan

You must repay your loan through the Student Accounts Office by the agreed-upon due date outlined in your promissory note.

Important: If you receive a government student loan, bursaries, scholarships, or other confirmed funding before your loan is due, the emergency loan amount will automatically be deducted from those funds and applied to your loan balance, even if this occurs before the repayment date shown on your promissory note.

Interest and late payments

No interest is charged if the loan is fully repaid on time.Ìý

If the loan is not repaid by the due date:Ìý

  • Interest will be applied

  • Account holds may be placed on your student record
