HÂþ»­â€™s PhD in Information connects research on technology, society, and ethics, giving you the tools to address pressing challenges, including the ongoing digital divide, misinformation, and the ethical use of generative Artificial Intelligence.

Work alongside leading researchers and global partners on topics like human-information interaction, human-centred design, data analytics, knowledge production, digital humanities and Indigenous and traditional knowledges while building the intercultural and leadership skills to make an impact in academia, industry, government, cultural institutions, and beyond.

Careers

Graduates of the PhD in Information work in academia, government, non-profit, and the private sector. They contribute to fields such as:

  • libraries, archives, and museums
  • cultural heritage
  • human-centred informaticsÌýand design
  • data analytics and visualization
  • information policy
  • information and data governance

Program options

The PhD in Information is a thesis-based program with both full-time and part-time pathways. Offered on campus with some flexibility after coursework, the program begins each September and combines advanced coursework, comprehensive exams, and original research leading to a defended doctoral thesis.Ìý

Students work closely with their supervisory committee to shape their studies, with course selection tailored to their research interests and career goals.

The program is designed to be completed within four to five years on a full-time basis or up to eight years on a part-time basis.

All graduate programs at HÂþ»­ are collaboratively delivered by a home Faculty and theÌýFaculty of Graduate Studies.

Program-specific requirements

This program requires you to meet the following criteria:

  • Thesis-based master's degree or its equivalent from a university of recognized standing.

  • Minimum GPA of 3.0/4.3 (B average) on 30 credit hours from a master's degree, and 30 credit hours from the most recent bachelor's degree.
