ʴDzٱ:February 2026

The learner spotlights feature students from Open Learning & Career Development who bring a wealth of dedication and diverse perspectives to their studies, and our programs benefit greatly as they work to advance their careers.

Meet Daemon Hart, a true veteran of the fire service. Before enrolling in the Diploma in Executive Fire Leadership, he was getting hands-on experience – serving as an Acting Assistant Chief at Windsor Fire and Rescue Services in Ontario where he led high-level specialized teams.

Even with all the operational knowledge, Daemon realized that he needed to add some advanced, academic management knowledge to excel in an executive leadership role. That’s exactly what he found in our Certificate in General Fire Service Administration. Now, as the Deputy Fire Chief of Operations, he shares how the program was essential to him landing his new role, the powerful network of peers he gained, and why this experience was “inspiring and transformative.”

The Drive for Executive Leadership

What was your job or career before enrolling in the certificate?

Before enrolling in the program, I was an Acting Assistant Chief at Windsor Fire and Rescue Services, Ontario as an operational commander at incidents, overseeing our Provincial specialized teams: Provincial Hazardous Materials CBRNE Level-3 Team and Provincial Urban Search and Rescue Team Task Force-2, and involvement in inter-agency collaborations.

“I had already accumulated significant frontline and leadership experience through the progression of departmental ranks of Captain, District Chief, and Assistant Chief, but I wanted to strengthen my academic and executive-level management knowledge to complement my frontline experience.”

Did the program fit your existing career path?

Absolutely. The program has been instrumental in my success in attaining the position of Deputy Fire Chief of Operations. As an officer transitioning toward executive leadership within Windsor, Ontario, a large municipal fire department, I recognized the need for advanced education in the administrative duties of the position. The program has equipped me with extensive knowledge and understanding of various aspects of my position, specifically budgets, strategic planning, organizational leadership, and affecting cultural change.

Beyond the Classroom: Network and Flexibility

What were you hoping to gain from enrolling? Did you gain something different?

I initially hoped to gain structured knowledge in the administrative responsibilities that would support my professional advancement.

“What I also gained, unexpectedly, is the relationships established with classmates and instructors with first-hand experience in the real-world challenges of the fire service.”

These relationships have continued outside of the classroom and created a network of professional peers who mentor and support one another.

How did you find the courses? Did the flexibility accommodate your work and personal commitments?

The courses were both challenging and rewarding. The virtual-learning model was essential, as it allowed me to balance my demanding work schedule by day while complimenting the academic responsibilities with evening classes.

What were the instructors like?

The instructors at H are outstanding. They combined academic expertise with real-world experience, which made the material highly relevant to my career. They were approachable, supportive, and always encouraged each student to share personal experience and vantagepoints. Their ability to connect theory with practice made each course meaningful, and I value the mentorship and guidance they provided. I am successful in my position because of instructors like , , , Dean Colthorp, , and . I have had the opportunity to take two courses under the tutelage of Jon Hunter – he is a remarkable instructor that is gifted at connecting with each and every student. His approach and leadership style brings out the absolute best in each of us. I am so grateful to have connected with each of these instructors. They are truly world-class instructors!!!

What was the overall learning experience like?

Inspiring and transformative. H gave me more than just courses, it gave me experiences that reshaped how I lead, how I learn, and how I connect with others. The experience has built my confidence, expanded my perspective, and helped me to see leadership not only as responsibility but as an opportunity to make a meaningful difference. In particular, the “discussion posts” provided me opportunity to learn from the experiences and knowledge of classmates and hypothesize solutions to our challenges.

What specific skills or knowledge did you gain from the program? Did any courses stand out to you?

The program has strengthened my skills in leadership development and change management. The Organizational Behaviour course especially stood out, as it convicted me to reflect on my leadership style, the importance of how I show up as a leader, how to build trust and affect cultural change through collaboration with my team. These lessons will continue to stay with me and shape how I lead.

The Turning Point: Career Advancement

Do you have anything else you would like to add?

H has provided me with more than just a certificate, it has been a turning point in my career. It has given me the tools to think critically, lead with conviction, and thrive in a demanding work environment. Most importantly, H has given me a network of relationships with professionals that continue to invest in my knowledge, growth as a leader, and career.

11. Do you have any advice for those looking to develop their career?

My advice is to never stop learning and never underestimate the power of relationships.

“Education is important, but so too are the networks you create and the people who walk the journey with you.”

Surround yourself with mentors, peers, and colleagues who challenge you to grow. Be curious, be courageous, and be willing to step outside your comfort zone. Leadership is difficult, doing it alone will result in failure. I believe that the most important element in any career involving leadership is the ability to build trust. Invest in others, establish trust, and you will succeed together!

Additionally, seek advice from H professionals that can assist you in navigating your academic path. Hilary Dominey (hilary.dominey@dal.ca) has been instrumental guiding my educational tract. She is passionate and truly cares about investing in your future.

Let’s take a moment to celebrate all the hard work and success of Daemon. His journey is a testament to the transformative power of education and courageous leadership. Our certificate didn't merely grant him a title; it fundamentally reshaped his perspective, building the critical confidence and executive-level academic credibility needed to embrace the formidable responsibility of Deputy Fire Chief of Operations. Advice for Future Fire Service Leaders

How has the certificate progressed, or changed your career? Did it lead to a promotion, new job, or more responsibilities?

The certificate has been instrumental in my journey to becoming Deputy Fire Chief of Operations.

“H has given me the academic credibility to match my operational experience, positioning me for the responsibility of executive leadership.”

I want to make two things very clear. First, H University and its instructors have been an integral part of my success in navigating the promotional process and attaining my position. Secondly, the relationships established with classmates have been paramount in providing direction, experience, and real-life practicality to my career. I am truly grateful!

How have you applied these new skills or knowledge to your work?

Every day, I draw on the lessons from H. Whether I’m leading operational emergency responses, mentoring future officers, navigating labour-relations, or collaborating with community partners, I use the skills that I learned from instructors and classmates. These skills have improved how I communicate, how I manage change, and how I build trust with my team and with the community.
