Exerpt from the aticle:

“[Habib] said it’s important to “reinvigorate” transit to meet demand while keeping essential routes for rural communities. Improvements like dedicated bus lanes and increased transit access for underserved areas are needed for Halifax to retain its large student population, according to Habib. 'It’s important to embody the energy of the youth who want to live a fuller life, and an active public transportation system will offer this the best,' he said.”

Exerpt from the aticle:

“Halifax is blessed with a harbour and we should use it better," said Ahsan Habib, a transportation expert and H University professor. “This is probably our time for awakening and making sure that we have alternative ways of moving people to our downtown, as well as connecting communities. We are an ocean playground in Nova Scotia and we should act like one.”

January 26th, 2026

Exerpt from the aticle:

“'We need to take steps, we need to plan our infrastructure, we have not responded enough with our population growth to grow our public transit system'. Habib said the situation in Halifax requires 'all hands on deck' and a coordinated response from the municipality and the province. What that looks like is more investment into bus rapid transit (BRT), or other forms of expedited transit, Habib said.”

Exerpt from the aticle:

"Ahsan Habib, director of H Transportation Collaboratory, studies and examines traffic. He says a post-COVID population boom paired with more people returning to in-person work has led to traffic gridlocks. 'The biggest driver is, of course, the population growth,' he added. 'So our (commute time) has increased since we are one of the highest growing municipalities in the country.' Habib points out 77 per cent of people in Halifax still commute by car but introducing bus routes that completely bypass traffic might help shift that behaviour."

January 21st, 2026

Exerpt from the aticle:

"Ahsan Habib, a professor at the School of Planning at H University, said focusing on public transit could help solve Halifax’s congestion woes. 'I always advocate that public transit will be the solution,' Habib said. 'We need to reduce the number of cars. Cogswell interchange as well as Windsor exchange will improve some flows, but we have some inherent system difficulties.'"

January 21st, 2026

Exerpt from the aticle:

"Habib said the [latest average congestion level] data validates the predictions from the H Transportation Collaboratory (DalTRAC) he directs, which show traffic volumes increasing over the coming years due to population growth and people returning to work in person."

November 20th, 2025

Exerpt from the aticle:

“One of the main reasons [for traffic slowdowns on Halifax's roads] is that we are growing. Our population size is growing larger, and we have a plan to grow farther,” he said. “We are rebounding from our COVID-19 travel behaviour, working from home is diminishing . . . many organizations are adopting return to office, as well. So, I think these are the two major drivers.”

Article Snapshot:

H research is helping the Halifax Regional Municipality plan a transportation system that’s efficient, sustainable, and ready for the city’s rapid growth. By modeling how residents move, commute, and adapt to change, H and HRM are shaping data-driven infrastructure that meets today’s needs while preparing for tomorrow

Exerpt from the article:

'[Ahsan]Habib says for motorists it will be a case of short-term pain for long-term gain.

“This is one of the areas that connects at least three regions, Halifax, Bedford as well as Dartmouth, so the improvement that we are expecting will be higher than any other project that we have seen. It will alleviate the gridlock position that we always experience in that area, particularly at the peak hours."'

CART Codes: HACK HOW WE MOVE | 24-Hour Student Hackathon

February 10, 2024

In the face of climate change, globalization, and inequity, transportation network and the communities they serve are becoming increasing vulnerable. Data collection and analysis are more important now than ever to establish benchmarks, quantify progress, and enact change. The complexity of these problems demands collective action to implement informed and proactive decisions and policies. Post-secondary students and recent graduates in computer science, engineering, and planning disciplines were invited to participate in the inaugural hackathon: CART Codes 2024. . (Halifax, N.S.)

Inaugural Research Showcase of the Climate Action Research for Transportation Network

February 9, 2024

The effects of climate change are having increasingly severe consequences across the country. Recent extreme weather events, including wildfires, flooding, and record breaking snowfalls are stark examples of the growing severity of the climate crises. As of 2022, the transportation sector accounts for 24% of Canada's greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Urgent actions needs to be taken to reach the federal governments goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2025. To accomplish this goal, an all hands-on deck approach is needed. With this in mind, the CART Network was established.  (Halifax, N.S.)
