March 31st, 2026Exerpt from the article: "Habib said the current estimate for a total evacuation is 23 hours. That’s an eight-hour increase since 2017. The estimate assumes that around 100,000 people occupy the peninsula on the average weekday. “It’s not the population that’s the problem here, it’s the network itself," said Habib. "Since we are a historic town, we retrofitted most of our improvements in roadways. There are not enough areas without queue-building [for traffic]." Habib said it’s good that Halifax Regional Municipality’s population is growing. But he said as HRM has added units, roads and neighbourhoods over the past decade, it has failed to properly account for the possibility of a mass evacuation into its plans." |
