Application Procedures

APPLICATION DEADLINE:

The absolute deadline for receipt of applications for HÂþ»­ University's Department of Philosophy is January 1st.

Please note:

  • All applicants for regular MA and PhD programmes will automatically be considered for the regular fellowship/teaching assistantship, (Special and Part-Time students may not be eligible.)
  • PhD applicants are normally expected to have applied for the SSHRC Pre-DoctoralÌý fellowship, or other external funding, and should state whether they have done so on their statement of interest.
  • Applicants are encouraged to apply for the Harmonized Scholarship.

ONLINE APPLICATION

To apply online, go to the Dal Online page.

Among other documents, the online application will demand that you upload the following:

  • A one-page statement of your philosophical interests (touching on your intellectual path and how you see your work fitting with the department members’ various interests)
  • A short (10-20 page) sample of your written work.
  • A copy of all of your post-secondary transcripts.

A digital image (both front and back sides of every sheet) of your transcripts will suffice for the purpose of your application. If your application is successful, then you will be asked to have official transcripts sent directly to the Department of Philosophy, c/o The graduate administrator. This should be received by the department by the end of the first two weeks in the program.

If required, the department may request additional documents after your initial application. These can be delievered directly to philgrad@dal.ca.

Note that the online application will ask for your references. The reference information that you enter in that section must include your referees' active and current institutional email addresses.ÌýEmail addresses hosted by a free email provider (Gmail, Yahoo, etc.) will not be considered valid and will result in a failed application.

Application for external funding can be considered a third component of this application. If you have questions about this, please enquire at philgrad@dal.ca.
