IDS Field School in Guatemala (May 7-20)
Report provided by John Cameron, Professor and Graduate Coordinator, International Development Studies
From May 7-20 twelve students took part in the first ever IDS field school in Guatemala through a partnership between IDS and the (BTS). Students learned through hands-on experience and engagement with community-based organizations about the contradictions of development and struggles for human rights and democracy.
The field school was designed in collaboration with BTS, which has been engaged in solidarity work with Guatemala since the 1980s. The itinerary for the field school focused on meetings and workshops with long-time BTS partner organizations, including the , the , the youth-based political-arts group , and , which has been resisting Canadian mining operations since 2018. We also learned about contemporary social and political issues in Guatemala through guest speakers such as New York Times reporter and Maya Kaqchikel PhD candidate , who shared her research on the connections between language and access to health care in Indigenous communities. We also learned a lot about Mayan cosmovisions and complex system of mathematics through meetings and workshops with Mayan activists and community leaders. The field school culminated with a meeting with Canada’s ambassador to Guatemala, Olivier Jacques, and embassy staff, where we reported on meetings with BTS partners and called on the Embassy to act on Canada’s to support human rights defenders. Despite a busy schedule, we ended every day with a journal writing session and shared reflections.
Organizing the field school would have been impossible without the experience and logistical capacity of BTS, which has been operating similar solidarity-focused delegations in Guatemala for over a decade. A very big thank-you to BTS coordinators Arturo Ezquerro-Cañete and Javier López. IDS hopes to offer the field school in collaboration with BTS again in 2028.

John Cameron. IDS Field School meets with Leocadio Juracán, leader of the Campesino Committee of the Highlands, who faces trumped-up criminal charges from the Guatemalan state for organizing political protests.Ìı
