Orientation for students with disabilities

New to Dal


Able@Dal

Able@Dal is an Orientation program specifically designed for first-year HÂþ»­ and King's students who are receiving academic accommodations due to a disability or medical condition.

Led by staff, faculty and students, Able@Dal focuses on skill development and learning strategies that are essential to your success as a student. Students are strongly encouraged to attend this event. Benefits include:

  • Connecting with other new from high school students.
  • Hearing first-hand from students about what it means to be a student with accommodations.
  • Developing a better understanding of accommodations at HÂþ»­ and King's and how to ask for support.
  • Hearing first-hand from professors on classroom expectations and ways to be successful.
  • Learning how to request and use your accommodations and different supports on campus.
  • Meeting your Access Advisor and the rest of the Student Accessibility Centre Team.

Able@Dal will be held on August 29 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at theÌýKenneth C. Rowe Management Building - Room 1028 (Potter Auditorium).Ìý

Check-in (8:00 - 8:30 a.m.)
Check in, have some food, and pick up your swag bag.

Land Acknowledgement (8:30 - 8:45 a.m.)
With the guidance of Alyson Young, we will all reflect on the land that HÂþ»­ is on: Mi’kma’ki - the traditional territory of the Mi’kmaw People.

Welcome Remarks (8:45 - 9:00 a.m.)
Quenta Adams (Assistant Vice-Provost, Student Engagement and Success) will provide opening remarks.

Introductions (9:00 - 9:30 a.m.)
Ashley Avery (Student Accessibility Manager) will highlight our dedication to accessibility and introduce the team.

Student Health & Wellness Panel (9:30 - 10:00 a.m.)
Team members from Health & Wellness will guide you through what supports they offer and how to access them.

Staff Panel (10:00 - 10:30 a.m.)
Support staff from the Writing Centre, our Ombudsperson, and our Dietician will answer questions and share how to connect with them.

Break (10:30 - 10:45 a.m.)
Students will move to Rowe 1020.

University 101: Accessibility Style (10:45 - 11:45 a.m.)
Presented by Alyson Young and Tressa Moore.

Student Panel (11:45 a.m. - 12:15 p.m.)
Hear first-hand from students about what it means to be a student with accommodations.

Survey and Wrap-Up (12:15 p.m.)

Parents & Supporters Session:ÌýAt the same time as Able@Dal, there will be a separate Parents & Supporters information session for parents and supporters of HÂþ»­ students registered with the Student Accessibility Centre. Hosted by access advisors, faculty, and staff, this session will introduce you to common first-year transitions and helpful campus resources. We encourage parents and supporters to attend in order to get information about the best ways to help and support first year at HÂþ»­ students.ÌýÌý(Note: a recording of this session will also be available after the event)
